Mr

Tim Hughes Hi everyone. My names Tim, I'm a 33 year old from Shropshire and I'm mad about Barbel. I work shifts in the Fire Service so get enough time off to give catching a few a good go in the season! All i'm hoping is that that the odd person may add to or benefit from my site!! CHECK OUT THE GROUP 'RIVER SEVERN BARBEL FISHING' on FACEBOOK!! Any advice is useful!! Thankyou

Cloudy warm day, gotta go fishing!!

Posted by Tim Hughes on Saturday, August 27, 2011 In : Late summer sessions
I awoke to an overcast, muggy day and immediately thought Barbel! My girlfriend has been threatening to come and fish with me, so I arranged to meet her at my favourite fishing spot after work. I got down there at about 2pm and spent a couple of hours baiting up and pratting about trying to learn how to cast my centrepin properly. I eventually go a cast to land somewhere I wanted it to and sat back to enjoy the afternoon sun at about 4pm.

Having never caught a barb on a pin I was in somewhat o...

Another good session on THE paste!

Posted by Tim Hughes on Thursday, August 25, 2011 In : Late summer sessions
Just a quick entry tonight as I'm shattered! I went fishing at about 14:00hrs and sat in the baking sun feeding up my chosen swim before eventually wetting a line at about 16:00hrs.

My rig was a simple feeder rig with pellets, hemp and method mix in the feeder and 2 small pellets glued on a hair below a size 14 Barbel Maxx hook all wrapped in my homemade paste.

Right from the off I was getting bites and the first fish came within 20mins. The fish came steadily pretty much each cast until I had ...

Super Paste or just good luck??!!

Posted by Tim Hughes on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 In : Short sessions
After a busy few nights at work the lure of the bank was proving irresistable. It was overcast and heavy showers were forecast, so I was obviously thinkin 'Barbel time'!

With the river still low and clear I like to fish in heavy rain as I feel it breaks up the glare and sunlight. I arrived at about half 5 in the afternoon and setup my new centrepin on my rod. Having never used a pin, I knew it could be a steep learning curve. My first cast landed about 6 inchs from the rod tip and the subseque...

An Evening with the Boy Steve

Posted by Tim Hughes on Monday, August 22, 2011 In : Short sessions
I got a call off a mate Steve, who I met through the website last season. He was up here ofr a few days, but sods law dictated that I was working the whole time apart from Thursday evening. I arranged to meet him at 18:30hrs at a venue that was fishing well.

I arrived to find Steve already fishing and having caught 6 Barbel during the afternoon he was already well pleased with himself! I suggested moving to another peg and fishing one rod a piece so we could catch up and talk tactics for the r...

Mid August 2 Day Trip

Posted by Tim Hughes on Monday, August 22, 2011 In : Guided Fishing Packages
I was contacted a few months back by a keen Fly Fisherman, Ian and two of his friends about a couple of days fishing in August. One of the group had caught a Barbel on still water, which I don't personally like, but hey - horses for courses and all that!

The boys arrived to meet me at 9am and we headed off out of town for what would hopefully be a good day by the river and the day two Barbel virgins lost their cherries!

The river looked great, a tinge of colour but still pretty low and still fa...

Quick trip on a muggy evening.

Posted by Tim Hughes on Monday, August 1, 2011 In : Short sessions
I had had a long hot day, 20km training walk, cleaning, cooking etc and just fancied an hour or two on the banks. I headed to my favourite spot at about 5pm, arriving at my best swim for about half past. I set my gear up, two rods, 12lb line, and 10lb hooklink which is slightly scaled down from my regular 15lb as the water is very clear at the moment.

Nothing fancy this evening, just a plain lead to size 14 hook with my usual mounted on a hair below. I was feeding by hand as the water was very...

Tough few days on a low River Severn

Posted by Tim Hughes on Friday, July 29, 2011 In : Guided Fishing Packages
It was way back near the start of the year that I was contacted by Paul and his mate Stephen about a 3 day River Severn tour. The dates were all agreed and then it was just about waiting for a few months all through the closed season.

We met up in my favourite pub to 'dicuss tactics' the night before we were due to kick off. This was good for me too as it gave me an idea of who I would be taking out on the banks. Anyway, 6 pints later I was on my way home to get an early night ready for a big ...

2 Short sessions in the drink!

Posted by Tim Hughes on Thursday, July 14, 2011 In : 2011/2012 Season Start
After going back to work after my summer leave I was ready for some time on the banks. I have a new ladyfriend, so alot of time has been spent doing other things (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more!) and I have been missing the river. A chap, John Heeson, who I met a few weeks ago was visiting again so I suggested a swim and arranged to meet him. He had arrived at 7am and I got there at about 13:30hrs - literally as John was striking into what looked to be a good fish! He played in gently ...

Rescued by a Lovely Chubbly!

Posted by Tim Hughes on Friday, July 1, 2011 In : 2011/2012 Season Start
Yesterday the weather was looking a bit dodgy. Sunny - cloudy - sunny - rainy - cloudy - sunny etc. etc!! I thought I'd chance my arm and go for a quick fish under my favourite tree.

I'd prepared my groundbait - halibut method mix, 6mm pellets along with my addatives of choice. I also prepared my meat and pellets to match. I chucked a few bits in and began to tackle up - opting for a slightly larger than usual size 8 raptor with a long hair to hold a big chunk of meat. I filled the feeder wit...

Quick session on a boiling hot evening!

Posted by Tim Hughes on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 In : 2011/2012 Season Start
After a baking ho Sunday and Monday I had arranged to meet a chap called Jim Farrer at my favourite local spot. I arrived at 5pm with the ambient air temp still being 26oC, it was very muggy and sunny. I walked down to the river and bumped into Jim's mate Ken before walking a bit further to meet Jim - After a quick chat I walked further to my favoured peg and was disappointed to find two lads already in it just setting up. arse!!

The river was up a good 2 feet from my previous visit, but I hav...
